How to Check Your Eligibility for a CARICOM Skills Certificate

Finding out if you qualify for a CARICOM Skills Certificate is a key step toward working in another Caribbean country under the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME). Here’s how to check your eligibility:

✅ Step 1: Know the Categories of Eligible Skilled Nationals

As of now, CARICOM recognises several categories of workers who are eligible for the Skills Certificate. You may qualify if you fall into one of these categories:

  1. University Graduates (from recognised institutions)
  2. Media Workers
  3. Sportspersons
  4. Artistes (including performing, visual, and literary artists)
  5. Musicians
  6. Technical and Vocational Workers (with certified qualifications)
  7. Teachers
  8. Registered Nurses
  9. Artisans (with Caribbean Vocational Qualification – CVQ or equivalent)
  10. Security Guards (with accredited training)

More categories may be added, depending on your country and CARICOM updates.

✅ Step 2: Prepare Required Documents

To apply, you typically need:

  • A valid passport
  • Birth certificate
  • Proof of qualification (e.g., degrees, diplomas, certificates)
  • Proof of nationality (e.g., passport or national ID)
  • Police certificate of character (from your home country and any other country you’ve lived in)
  • Two passport-sized photos
  • Completed application form

Some professions may require registration with a professional body.

✅ Step 3: Apply Through Your Home Country’s Competent Authority

Each CARICOM member state has a CSME Focal Point or Competent Authority that processes applications. For example:

  • Barbados: Immigration Department
  • Trinidad & Tobago: Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs
  • Jamaica: Ministry of Labour and Social Security

Contact them or visit their websites to confirm the application process and any local requirements.
